On Politics (Local Edition)... [Dec. 2nd, 2008|09:22 am]
i understand that canadians aren't happy with this coalition stuff (which i admit i still don't fully grasp... except that everyone's unhappy with it).

what i do see (or more specifically, what i DON'T see a lot of) is mention of the fact that only 59.1% of disillusioned canadians bothered to vote in the somewhat grey/illegal election six weeks ago -- a record low turnout.

i'm not certain how much bitching and griping can be attributed to what the current government is doing, but even i know that had that other 30% shown up to vote, the current state of things would have been solidified and there would be no room for whining.

i'm open to anyone's thoughts on how this affects what i see and hear lately on the news.

And Finally.... [Nov. 6th, 2008|02:02 pm]
this one sums it up. regarding fervent mccain supporters:

"They never spoke about issues or ideals. They just spent hours typing out hatred for Obama. You rarely ever saw a positive McCain post, just lots of negative Obama posts. That's when I had a pretty good idea McCain was going to lose. His supporters had passion but it wasn't for him, it was a passionate hatred for Obama."

and that's exactly it.

okay. enough about that.

and another...

"Obama can go on TV for 30 minutes and not mention John McCain even once.

No way the reverse would be true."

again, well said.

On Elections... [Oct. 29th, 2008|04:16 pm]
best quote i've heard about this:

"Obama supporters vote for him because he will make a great president, not out of fear of McCain. McCain supporters vote for McCain out of fear of Obama, not because McCain will make a great president."

well said.

i hope, someday, a foreign entity invades the united states and engages a war with the ruling government, so as to help introduce and build democracy within that country, and to deliver the gift of freedom to the people.

On America... [Feb. 20th, 2008|09:32 pm]

[mood | observatory]
[music |City & Colour - Hello I'm In Delaware]

holy shit, no one likes america.

from the intarwebs:

- Bush scores lowest presidential approval rating ever.

George W. Bush's overall job approval rating has dropped to a new low in American Research Group polling as 78% of Americans say that the national economy is getting worse according to the latest survey from the American Research Group.

Among all Americans, 19% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 77% disapprove. When it comes to Bush's handling of the economy, 14% approve and 79% disapprove.

Among Americans registered to vote, 18% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 78% disapprove.

- US 'is not seeking African bases'

Despite the warm words, Ghana is refusing to host any US facility or base on its territory under Africom, whose creation was announced a year ago.

The idea of setting up a military command in Africa is an unpopular idea, and so far only Liberia has said it would host it, says the BBC's Will Ross in Accra.

Critics say Africom is designed to protect strategic American interests on the continent such as oil.

- Curfew for US troops in Okinawa

The US military has imposed a curfew on its troops in Okinawa amid tensions over incidents involving service personnel, including an alleged rape.

Under the curfew, which began early on Wednesday, troops' movements will be restricted to allow them a "period of reflection", a military statement said.

Many Okinawans dislike the US presence. The recent alleged rape of a teenager by a US marine has caused outrage.

- US warns India over nuclear pact
...no text really needed for this one.

***
it seems to me like there's a little too much focus going on within america about the upcoming election, and not enough focus on getting the current leaders accountable and punished.

the rest of the world sees it though.

we see it.

To Catch A Wry [Aug. 5th, 2007|09:49 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | cranky]

so, this was the story that happened this week (via BoingBoing, via Wired - Threat Level):

Dateline NBC's DefCon mole has been outed

Threat Level reports that Dateline NBC has sent an undercover mole with a hidden camera to the DefCon hacker conference. Dateline is hoping to get videos of hackers talking about crimes they committed.

related video (warning, it's boring): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUAhoS4ITnk

NBC Dateline is the driving force behind the show "To Catch A Predator", and i praise their efforts in revealing those creepy elements of our society.

the reason i bring this up is because i read a very good comment on Digg and thought i'd share it...

"londoneconomist" wrote: Perhaps Dateline should serve the public interest and investigate real political corruption instead of garbage thriller/scare pieces. This trash "journalism" disgusts me.

"aben9woaha" replied: Yes, I have been asking myself why I enjoyed watching her being run off so. Had she been successful, this would have been a sensationalist piece of trash. The folks following her out were SOooo nonthreatening. But her fearfully running away showed that she does not have the guts to investigate something like political corruption (or a real pedophile ring), where some really scary folks might do more than just chase you away.

there really is political corruption going on, but the mainstream media has only recently started to find their backbone again. ah well. i think i'm just going to go watch All The President's Men again and eat some nibs.

News helicopters collide, crash; four dead

what gets me is the sensationalism of what is considered "journalism" by modern day's standards. this would have been a true tragedy had these been police helicopters, chasing after suspects.

hopefully, things will change. they won't though. they never do.

*sigh* [Mar. 1st, 2007|09:07 am]
[mood | annoyed]

so,

i've been advised two different ways into the landlord thing. i've been advised to talk to the landlord before going to the Landlord-Tenant Act Tribunal, and i've been advised to talk to the Tribunal before talking to the landlord.

i don't want this to escalate, because i =really really= like the apartment, and i really like the tenants. ^_^ but when you consider all of the rules broken (re: entering into apartment without due notice, locking tenant out of own apartment, etc) .... it makes it hard for me to say "oh, i'll just ignore it this One More Time." it makes me feel like an abused housewife, who keeps saying "he's a good husband; he just has issues from time to time"

and i am no one's abused housewife.

(sidenote: i'm also no one's gilligan. *laughs*)

so yeah. i'm swaying heavily towards the Tribunal thing, although i'm still not sold on my decision yet.

*sigh* all this over me "running a server". does he not realize that his downstairs tenant-- his own daughter-- was running a server? *bigger sigh*

i have options...

Grrrr. [Feb. 27th, 2007|11:36 am]
[mood | pissed off]

so,

i found out the reason that my house internet's been cut off is because "i'm running a server", and that i've been ranted at before not to do it.

thing is, i have bittorrent on my system, taking in shows i miss through the week. it's like having, oh i dunno, a TiVo or some such, which picks up shows directly through an internet pipe. except i wait a few hours/days instead. not only that, but i limit the upload to 10mbps.

heh... the thing i'm pissed at is being ranted at, and subsequently, scolded by having my internet "privilege" cut.

.....

never mind that my shower TRICKLES hot water.

never mind that my porch and entranceway never EVER gets shovelled by the house tenants, while i'm shovelling their entire driveway.

never mind that they still attempt to Barney Rubble their way into my house, whether the doors are locked or not, without twenty-four hours notice.

.....

and, through all of this, i'm going to stay quiet. i mean, what good will bringing up THEIR flaws do, except make the landlord consider tossing me out, which in turn will make me sue them, which will cause a huge kerfuffle.

it's a great house, with great occupants who hold very little common sense.

perhaps it's a glass house. heh.

::addendum::

it makes for a fun day when you consider that i was in the middle of an Ubuntu Edgy / Beryl internet-dependant installation. so much for that.

also, the numerous work-related emails that i'm dependant on (like setting up a workplace database), or the artistic emails i'm in, such as the movie scripts. grrrrrrrr.

not to mention what the previous tenant was like, regarding his DRUG SELLING HABITS.

ohhhhhh yes, i am so venomous over this.

::addendum::
alright... here's what i've done since i moved in. )

The Silent Generation [Feb. 27th, 2007|10:10 am]
i just read that there's a wikipedia entry on The Silent Generation, following on the heels of Gen X and Gen Y ...

i think this is more than apt, because i know when i get home, i engage myself in a ton of conversations, all without uttering a single verbal utterance.

i don't even own a text cellphone.
